This is a 7v6 exercise, with the defending team lining up in a 4-2 plus a GK and the attacking team lining up in a 2-4. There is a clear match-up between all the players so the defenders must make the decision of when to press. It is as important to press the ball as cut off different passing options.
Players should be brave when blocking shots or crosses. If a striker starts to drop to receive a pass to feet, the nearest defender should shift their weight on to their front foot to follow them and engage. If the ball is wide and it isnât clear who is responsible for the striker, the centre-back who can see both the striker and the ball should follow the striker out. If the ball is on the left and the striker is between the right centre-back and rightback, that centre-back should step up as they can see the striker and the right-back canât.
