Hockey: One Handed Block - Reverse Stick

I love using Sportplan. It's been a great help for co-ordinating hockey...
Laura, Hockey Coach

DESCRIPTION

  • Players set up in pairs, this is a 1 v 1 situation
  • One player starts with the ball and dribbles towards the defender
  • The defender must then tackle the attacker with the flat face of their reverse stick, using one hand only.
  • COACHING POINTS

  • The defender should maintain a low body position when tackling, to transfer weight into tackle
  • The defender's hand on the stick should be towards the bottom of the grip, to keep a strong hold of the stick
  • The angle of the stick should be relatively upright, but tilted slightly towards the floor, so that the ball cannot go through the stick.
  • The defender should push against the ball, keeping momentum to win the ball from the attacker.
