Change the Point of Attack

2 teams both with a ball. The object is for one of the wingers to get to the back line without being tackled. For a tackler to be released by the other team, the tackler has to receive and leave the ball in the coned area. When one of the wingers is threatened the team should try and change the point of attack by passing the ball via every player to the other side. To release the other tackler, the ball has to be passed via sweeper.

Changing the point of attack

Player 1 starts with the ball and runs down the wing. The defender puts on some pressure . Just before player 1 loses the ball he/she turns away from the defender and passes the ball to player 2 or through a zone with defender 2 in it.(This defender can only try and intercept the pass). When player 2 or 3 receives the ball he/she plays the ball to player 4 who runs into the circle and has a shot at goal. The players follows his/her pass.Pass and follow sequence 1-(2 or 3)-4 (defender 1 and 2 should be switched every so often).

White Player 1 dribbles with the ball to the blue cone before passing the ball through the red gates. Red player 1 receives the ball once it has gone through the gate and then repeats the practice in the opposite direction.

Far post goal

The player on the left passes the ball into the path of the player on the right. When this player receives the ball they continue to run with with it before passing the ball to the player on the far post who then has shot on goal. The player passing to the far post continues to run after their pass and takes up a new position by the right post. The practice can now start again from the other side.

Ball each players have to stand next to the ball with the ball on the right. On the whistle the players should turn towards the ball spread their feet either side of the ball bend down and put the stick behing the ball. This would be the position the ball should be stopped. Repeat the practivce lots of times to make sure every player understands the position. Then progress to the passing of the ball in pairs.

Players line up in two groups outside the 23 metre area.Player on the left, passes the ball to a player on the right running towards the goal. On receiving the ball this player runs into the circle and shoots at goal. After passing the ball, the player on the left runs towards the goal and receives the pass from the player on the left etc.

Passing with Decision Making

Setup the practice as shown with cones 5m, 10m and 15m away. Split the group into pairs. Player 1 remains behind the line while player 2 moves backwards and forwards into the different zones. The position of player 2 determines what kind of return pass is made. This exercise develops decision making as well as using three passing techniques in one exercise.

The team with the ball must try and keep possession of the ball. Only 2 players from each team are allowed to be inside the area. 1 player can move anywhere on the outside of the area. To involve this player, the players inside the area have to pass the ball to the outside player. On doing so, the outside player can come into the area and the player that passed the ball becomes the new outside player.

Player 2 passes the ball to player 1. Player 1 then passes the ball into the goal with a slap hit. Player 2 follows his/her pass and takes the position of player 1.

No matter where you are on the pitch, if you feel that you cannot continue to apply pressure towards the goal Then start to play away from defender, and play the ball to your supporting player; this player then has the choice to:1.Change the point of attack by passing the ball across the pitch, or2.Pass the ball to the original player.

Objective: To be able to complete an accurate push pass with sound technique.  Purpose: The push pass is important to be able to make short, quick, accurate passes. It is quick due to the fact there is no back swing so is ideal for passing in tight areas.  Structure: Pairs

Objective: To be able to receive the ball from the right and transfer to the left with a pass.  Purpose: Being able to transfer the ball from right to left in once motion means the transfer will be faster to take advantage of space created. Structure: Pairs or Group of 3's

Players have to pass the ball around the outside of the square with only 3 players. To make this possible, the player after the pass has to move to the empty corner (any direction).

The inside team (white) pass the ball around the outside of the small square. At the same time the blue team on the large square are running a relay around the the outside square.

Players move as shown in the diagram. Player at the front of the queue passes to the player on the wing who is moving from side to side waiting for the pass. They then run up the line and then cut back and pass to the player waiting in the circle who then shoots at goal. Players involved then move round and play starts again.

5 Players with one ball have to pass with only 2 touches on the ball each time, to each other in any direction whilst moving up the pitch. IMPORTANT to keep shape and not too many touches. Try and run as a team from one 25 to the other without making a mistake. With every mistake, the team should run back to the 25 and start again.

Teams of 4 try and pass the ball across the pitch as quickly as possible, not missing any players out. Each player should at least touch the ball twice. The first team to pass the ball 10 times across the pitch is the winner.

The Clip Hit Passing & Receivi...

Objective: To master the clip hit, often used as a progression to the full hit, but also very effective in a game situation. Purpose: It is a quicker hit than a full swing hit due to the fact the hands are lower down the stick, shorterning the swing and menaing you can get a quick hit away under pressure.  Structure: Pairs

Objective: To get the attacking player to receive and roll strong, away from the tackling defender. Purpose: Rolling/peeling away from the defender is a relatively low risk strategy to consolidate possession and eliminate.  Structure: Pairs or Groups of 3 (potential to add in passive/active defender)

Players need to get into groups of 3 with one ball in each group. Number the players 1, 2 and 3. The area can be either the whole or 1/2 a pitch. When no.1 has the ball no.2 has to run in a straight line until no.1 passes the ball. Once no.2 has received the ball player no.3 has to make a run. Players can run anywhere on the pitch.

1 Player passes the ball to the player through the cones then follows it to put pressure on the receiver. The receiver has to try and pass the ball to the player left or right, and then follows the ball to take that players position. The second player receiving the ball runs back to the start.

Player 1 runs square across the pitch with the ball and then passes the ball into the space for the wide man to run onto the ball both sides. Then alternate sides.

Push Passing & Receiving - Hoc...

Grip: Hands apart but similar 'double V grip' to the hitting technique. Head: The head should be positioned over the right foot as the player starts to push the ball. The head will finish well over the left foot once the follow through has been completed. Ball: Almost a full stick length away from the body. The ball should start in front of the right foot and will be released when it has passed the left foot. Keep the stick in contact with the ball for as long as possible. A good follow through technique will see the head of the stick pointing at the intended target. On the move: Players should use the 'cross-over' step where the penultimate step is the right foot crossing behind the left foot. This motion allows the player to stay in a low position throughout the push. Keeping both feet on the ground when in contact with the ball will help the player stay balanced throughout the pushing technique, and will help the transfer of weight from right foot to left.

How to coach school team with novices and experienced players?

Hi,I perhaps naively, expected to have most of our team from last year carry over and only have a few new comers to integrate and get up to speed with the rest. However meeting the team at our first practice last night i find I have five players still at school from last year and the rest all new comers, most of whom had not held a hockey stick at all till practice.This being only my second season coaching (year 9 to year 13 boys) has left me feeling a little blindsided, and feeling quite unsure how to prepare practices that target both groups of boys. Do i lump them both groups together, keep them separate? What drills/exercises to best bring the new comers up to speed.I don't want to neglect either group, keep practice worthwhile for the experienced boys, but also bringing the new comers up to a level were they can mix in with the others and learn organically from them while practicing as a team.
