Rugby: Connaught

Great site and excellent drills. Easy to understand and apply in training....
Tyrone, Rugby Coach

DESCRIPTION

  1. Carries the ball forward, inviting the defence to press up.
  2. 10 Passes to 12.
  3. 10 loops around 12 following their pass, 10 should aim to draw attention to their run, they are a decoy.
  4. 11 presses up, and and then at speed changes the angle of their run, hitting the inside shoulder of 12. This pass should be as close to the opposition defence as possible.
  5. 12 passes to 11, 11 take on an angle.

Think about what will happen next. Could 12 cancel and offer an outside ball to 10, could 11 pass to 13 and then out via the rest of the back-line. It's vital that your team makes this move your own!

COACHING POINTS

  • Think about using cones to mark out starting and target points.
  • Allow players to cancel, but if they do cancel, what are their options?
  • Execute the pass from 12 to 11 as close to the defensive line as possible.
  • 11 needs to think about their running line.
  • Players heads need to be up, a move should be a fluid attacking strategy.
  • Think about player foot-speed, do the players need to be running flat out all the time?
