Is there a drill to teach cutting on a free hit? When there is a free hit; how do we get kids to learn how to create space/get open during the hit?
Hi Michelle,
There are some great drills in the Movement Off The Ball section to help the kids understand how to create space and take advantage of it.
By starting uncontested, the children will get used to the movement patterns to lead for the ball and create space to receive it/create an option. Once they have developed an understanding of movement, add in defenders to make the practice more game-realistic.
I hope this helps and good luck with your sessions!
By "Cutting" I assume you mean movement off the ball?
If so, this is what you need to consider:-
Players should make their movements according to the following priorities based on a positive style of play.
1. Seek out space behind opponents
2. Move towards the ball and then hook (bend the run) to pick the ball up behind/level with an opponent
3. Move to a position that with one touch carries you past an opponent
4. Move to create an angle that allows forward vision following reception
5. Move to receive and then turn to face opponents
6. Move to receive - lay off- and the receive again
Which option you use depends on angles and distances (and to some extent the game context but..................)
Different players should be offering different runs at any one point.
The most important thing is that someone moves somewhere this is the catalyst for everything else as it creates space for another run.
Watch the Sportplan website and soon this topic will be dealt with in detail under Support Play.
