I am teaching corners today for my JV team. It is our first practice that is separated from Varsity. What are good drills to use?
Hi Erica,
If you are looking to find the best players for your penalty corners, you can start by grouping your team into 3`s, and asking them to rotate between injecting, stick stopping, and flicking/hitting. This allows all players to try each skill and find which one they are best at - as well as allowing you to see everyone at once.
From here, I`d split the team into 5/6 and ask them to make up some set plays, that they will run against the other teams (if you have some sort of padding for the defenders it keeps it safe and allows the attackers to perform the skills at match speed without fear of hurting their teammates).
Finally, I would run your own personal penalty corner routines with a group of players you select from what you have just seen during the session, allowing these people to focus on corners for use in games (the rest of the team can practice personal skills, e.g. tomahawk, aerials, 3d skills etc.).
Let me know your thoughts on the above,
Josh
Hi Josh,
Thank you so much for your response. This is essentially was my plan had been. Our season just started so I am just getting to know the girls and I am still evaluating their game knowledge, skill dimensions etc. It`s always good to know/see other Coaches are on the same page.
I will let you know how they go tomorrow!
Thanks once again!
Erica
