I have just started coaching touch at my school and have been trying to find out about field positions. can anyone help me? i have only been doing drils at practice and now want to start having mini matches.

Congratulations on starting up touch rugby at your school.
I suggest that you look at the IRB website called "Rugby Ready" to help you get started.
Type in irbrugbyready.com to your browser and you will find the website has lots of relevant information for you.
If the children are just learning how to play I agree that you should play lots of small sided games (4 v 4) rather than 15 a side. Do not bother yet about scrums and lineouts, just get them playing touch and having lots of fun.
Look at the tab above to see "IRB Website" for ideas on how to develop from touch to full rugby games.
I hope this helps.

We need more do gooders like you in the world.
You will see with kids, the ball won't move too fast; everybody will follow it across the field/pitch and it gets overly congested. So as all the kids chase the ball over yonder we keep one or two players just standing back by opposite sideline. As the entire defense over commits to one side a player just turns and kicks it straight back( a little down field) across to our sleepers. This will really open up the game.
