My guys in Cape Verde can't seem to get the concept?

My guys in Cape Verde can't seem to get the concept of a good pass... They just throw the ball in the general direction of the closest player and there is always SO MUCH scrambling around on the ground to get it again.  I've showed them video clips on you tube of drills and real games, I tell them every day that if they make good passes to their teammates then they save the time of fumbling around on the ground for the ball, but they seem to almost enjoy doing that....any ideas??

You don't mention the age of players. The first skill to get younger players to develop is getting their hands up to receive a pass, firstly this shows they are ready to receive the ball from a fellow player and it gives the passer of the ball a point fo focus for the pass to go to... As a coach run the drill and keep calling out to them "hands up".

Hope this helps.

I agree with Cath that getting players to give a "target" with their hands is a key point and also suggest that you get the recieving player to call for the ball as well.

This focusses everyone involved and can be made to be great fun. Use it in your warm ups when your players are running around and passing - if they dont call for the ball dont pass it to them!

Good luck out there in the Adlantic!

Both Simon and Cath are on the money here. A simple process to include in any of your passing drills is to have the players 'clap their hands' in front of their stomach; their hands will now be in the correct position and ready to catch the ball.

Thanks, I have always done the hands up thing and told them they need to give a target, I guess what my real problem is I can't figure how to get the transfer from drills to games. They do great during drills and then we scrimmage or we get into a real game situation and it's like they don't remember what we did thirty minutes ago. My guys range in age from about 18-28. It's just that I'm starting a league, I'm taking a whole bunch of guys and NONE of them have ever played before. We'll keep truckin though.
