Drills to perfect the 1 3 3 1 attack structure
Asked using Sportplan on Mobile
Hello Pedro,
Firstly, thank you for this question. Three of the best drills in order to perfect the 1 3 3 1 structure is to firstly, get the forward pack to start getting used to working in the "diamond shape" pods of three. Get them used to different formations of the 3 pod and working with each other before, during and after the possession with the ball.
Secondly, getting the forward pack being able to work off 10 (flyhalf) and keep working around the corner. Being able to nominate who is the ball carrier and who will be clearing the ruck and protecting the ball. So communication and decision making is crucial in this process.
Finally, run throughs. Practice makes perfect, so it is crucial that the backs and the forwards get used to working with each other to create space for the outside wingers of fullback. Players must by decisive and direct with their running ensuring that they pull defenders in.

Hi Pedro, when doing team run-throughs practising the structure players have a tendency to try and play at a million miles an hour. Make it more realistic by slowing the ball down at the rucks. It is better to wait until you are organised (i.e. pods of three) Make sure your 9 doesn`t throw passes before the team is ready.
In a team run through I think anything you can do to make it more realistic and put pressure on will be beneficial. When doing run through our coach will take the ball off us when there is none or one player clearing out a ruck. Because in a game you will likely have the ball turned over. Also if a mistake is made our coach takes the ball and kicks it back. This is good practice for the 11, 14 and 15 to regather the ball and get your teams momentum back.
Also, this attacking structure is great. But should not be used everywhere on the pitch. When you are in the opponents 22-try line I recommend playing off 9 rather than 10. This is to minimise the risk of handling errors and to avoid losing territory throwing the ball back twice. Also, when in your own half you might want to think about kicking for space or for touch.
