Rugby warm-Ups for Mini Rugby Aged 8

Rugby warm-Ups for Mini Rugby Aged 8

Hi. I am in charge of the Mini Rugby (age 8) warm-up and am interested in more ideas. I try and keep them fun, sports specific and interesting for the boys and they seem to like what I do. Can anyone please help? Thanks!

Might not be the best Rugby specific warm-up but one warm-up i remember doing when i was younger and very easy to set up and do was the following:

  • 2 partners lay down facing each other about 1 metre apart.
  • One line of partners are called `Rabbits` and the other line is called `Rats`.
  • The coach shouts either `Rats` or `Rabbits`.
  • The name the coach shouts, the partner under that name should get up, turn around and run 20m to a cone while the other partner under the other name should try to catch them before they reach the cone.
  • Could add variations such as increasing the distance and instead of catching, they should tackle them, get them in different starting positions, involve a ball, involve it in a team event.
  • However, this is a very basic warm-up drill and isn`t the most rugby specific, but it`s something that is very easy to do and encourages friendly competition.

Hi Keith

At that age I`d always recommend games like bulldog or stuck in the mud as opposed to running around a pitch without a ball. Other good games are rob the nest and varieties of a square with the ball being passed around (more than one ball and so on).

Tag / It can also be something they enjoy.

Good luck!
