Which defence system is the most effective for 15-man rugby and what drills can I use for the rush/sliding defence...especially to get the guys in the inside to slide with and close up the inside gap from the 2nd phase onwards.
Rossi, Each team has to decide which defense suits them the best. If you have fast aggressive centers you may decide to use the umbrella defense in certain parts of the field. Many teams use drift defense in most of the field but opt to use Man to Man in their own 22 meters. I have attached a drill which may help you to get the players to close up gaps. They need to communicate constantly as they close up to ensure they know who is tackling who. I hope this helps. Perhaps other coaches out there have more ideas to help you? Simon
