Hello, in open play i want to have my forwards split up across the field not just chasing the next ruck. im not sure exactly how to teach them where they should be standing. (positional play) (Dane coles always seems to be a wing in open play)
But you can create your own set structure. Make it your own, give it a name and tell your team what part of the pitch you want them to use it in!
Hi Dan, I always find it`s helpful to coach a `pod` system. I.e. Forwards should learn to work in threes (1 carries the ball and 2 clear the ruck). I`d recommend having a set structure that you have a call for. For example, my team has `chaos play` when we are in the opponents half between halfway and 22. Number 1-5 and 8 form two pods of 3 and you should designate a channel on either side of the pitch. 6 and 7 can stay out wide ready to clear out any rucks if the ball goes out wide, or to get the ball where they are likely to be able to run over an opposition winger. To coach this, I would recommend getting them all to stand in those positions, then getting them to run against no opposition, working the ball from sideline to sideline and making sure the forwards stay in their bods and do not switch around. When 1 pod is carrying the other can get up into position or the ball can go out to the wings.
