drills for passing with u8s
Hi Poppy. Here are some specific rugby passing drills from the Sportplan website that are suitable for U8 players:
1. Basic Passing Drill
Setup: Create a small grid with cones (e.g., 10x10 metres). Split players into pairs and position them at opposite sides of the grid.
Drill: Players pass the ball to each other across the grid, focusing on using proper passing technique (both hands, following through). After each pass, players take a step back to increase distance.
Progression: Add a defender in the middle to simulate pressure and encourage quicker, more accurate passes.
2. Passing and Moving Drill
Setup: Arrange players in two lines facing each other, spaced about 5 metres apart.
Drill: The first player in one line passes to the first player in the opposite line and then runs to the end of the opposite line. The receiving player then repeats the process.
Focus: Ensure players are passing and moving to keep the drill dynamic and encourage constant movement.
3. Passing Tag
Setup: Create a small area and designate a few players as taggers.
Drill: Players must pass the ball to each other while trying to avoid being tagged by the taggers. If a player is tagged, they become a tagger.
Focus: This drill combines passing practice with movement and agility, making it engaging for younger players.
4. Pass and Support
Setup: Set up a grid with cones to define the area. Split players into groups of three.
Drill: One player passes to a teammate and then runs to support the receiver. The receiver then passes to the next player in the group and runs to support them. Rotate roles frequently.
Focus: Emphasise the importance of supporting the ball carrier and maintaining communication.
5. Passing through Gates
Setup: Place cones to create small gates (about 1 metre wide) around the pitch.
Drill: Players form pairs and pass the ball through the gates to each other. They must aim to pass through the gates without hitting the cones.
Progression: Increase the number of gates or reduce the size to challenge accuracy and control.
These drills help young players develop fundamental passing skills while keeping them active and engaged. You can find these drills and more detailed explanations on the Sportplan website or app for specific coaching needs.
I hope this helps,
Cam
