working on passing backwards within primary and secondary

any ideas of drills that can be used for primary and secondary pupils for passing backwards? currently having an issue with them staying onside and keeping behind the ball carrier

Hi Alex,

Passing backwards can be a difficult concept for young children to understand. You could try lining them up on a line of cones, with the second line of cones about 1 meter in front of them. Say that they must run out to the other cones but can only pass once they reach the second line of cones. And they are not allowed to move off the first line until they have the ball.

Once they get better and better you could start adapting the drill to get more and more like the one below. They might enjoy the aspect of going to ground and it starts to teach them another essential rugby skill.

Hope this helps!

Ball Presentation and Handling

DESCRIPTION
This drill is designed to get your players in good habits when presenting the ball at the breakdown. This will allow your team to hold onto possession better and get quicker ball. The players run towards cones in lines of three, passing the ball from one end to the other. When the coach says "Down" or blows their whistle, whoever has the ball must drop to the ground and present the ball. The player who has presented the ball then passes to the player behind him and the drill carries on continuously. 0.29 - Demonstration 1.20 - What is the purpous of this drill?
