Compete

Tell your players the following..... The players on the bags will squeeze the bags together to make removal of the ball hard but not impossible. The running player will aim to removing the balls from between the bags. They will start at the first bag and move on to the second and then the third. When they remove the last ball they swap places with one of the players at the bag, and that player will become the running player. The players competing for the ball will use a jackal position in order to remove the ball.

Continuous Ruck Support

Groups of 4 and two groups of defenders with contact pads. 1 ball per group. The ball carrier drives into the contact pads and presents ball backwards. Player 2 binds on, face to face and secures ball, player 3 binds on the other side to form a front row. All attackers bind together and drive defenders back 2-3 metres. Player 4 takes ball out at back and runs back around cone with players 1-3 in support. Repeat going back the other way until all attackers have practised each role.

Tell your players the following..... One player will straddle the bag and compete for the ball on the ground. The two remaining players will remove the competing player. The competing player will change sides, and compete for the ball on the opposite side, but the remaining two players need to get there quickly to stop them and remove the competing player again. This sequence repeats until the coach says stop. That's it, let get going. Don't forget to change the players around.

Ball should be wedged between 2 sausages. 3. Live but Static A tackler hsould start on his knees half tacklignan attakcing player. A jackler should be behind and as soon as tackled player hits the floor should be over the top jackling. A 3rd player bag man, should test his tsability. 4. Jackal and Bag Race Bag man and Jackler start either side of a sausage. Coach blows his whistle, both leap to feet and compete for the ball. Race for space

Presenting The Ball In A Circle

A circle must be set up for player/coach to walk around. The players must be in pairs with one been the attacker and the other the defender. Both players start stomach down however the defender is on top of the attacker and must work to stay on top of the attacker. The coach/player walks around the circle shouting ‘set’ at 10-15 second intervals, at the command ‘set’ the attacker must move and present the ball with both balls towards the coach/player.

Ruck Clearing Exercises

Progressive exercises to improve clearing out at the ruck Lay a tackle tube on the floor with another tube on top, angled into the air, with a ball on the floor in front of the first tube CLEAR: The player starts lying flat on the ground in a press up position, before angling their run and tackling the top tube ROLL: Same set up, but the tube is tiled the opposite direction. The player runs round and wraps their arms round the tube before rolling away to the right with the momentum of their run.

Repetitive drill aimed at improving the clear out of a defender at the ruck Players are split into groups of three, two attackers and a defender. The defender wears a padded bib/vest The ball carrying attacker moves towards the defender who makes a passive tackle causing the attacker to go to ground and present the ball as if in a ruck in a match The defender then attempts to ruck over and jackal the ball The second attacker then comes in and attempts to clear out the defender.

Sausage Cones After you have completed the bounce motion, you can bounce and fire. Fire - is by any means effect there breakdown and slow the ball down - when you realise you cant steal the ball. Jackal - stay on and win the ball over the break down. Players line up on the cones the first play makes a tackle on the sausage get s up and becomes the defender. (jackal) the second player listens to the coloured cone the coach shouts and goes around that cone before trying to clear the (jackaler) The jackaler makes the decion to Jackle or Fire through the break down depending on the speed of the arriving defender.

The player then attacks down the 5m chanel. The player opposite makes a chop tackle, bounces and competes. for the ball. (Tackler becomes clearer). The 2 other players then try to clear the player off the ball. Decinign whether to fire or steal ball depedning of spped of clearer off the floor.

Groups of 3 Sausage Ball1 player lines up opposite a standing sausage, wrestles it to the floor, landing chest ontop of the bag. A 2nd play holding a ball puts the ball down on the right side of the sausage as if it was an attacker placing it. The first play wrestling the sausage, bouncers up and competes for the ball (remeber to release) The 3rd player once the ball has been placed tries to clear the player competing for the ball.

Ball Tackle Suits Players around the outside pass the ball around with eachtoher until coach blows his whistle. Whoever has ball in hand then attacks the defender in the middle. The two players closest (1,2) become the clear out players with the attacking player with the ball. The 3rd layer on the outside becomes the Jackler, after the player in the middle has made a low chop tackle.

1. Crocodile roll Crocodile roll is one technique to repmove threats from a breakdown.Most useful for smaller players to move larger ones. Require control, power, accuracy.Identify if croc roll is the right technique to use. Target the defenders upperback/lower neck region. Initate the clear out by big shoulder contact into that area, set feet wide, then bearhug the defender Use momentum and rotate hips downwards, maintain strong grip and roll palyer off the ball. Finish movement on top of player and compete for ball. 2. Smash If player is slow to attack ball smash may be the best option.Here clear the defender out the way and remove the threat using normal rucking technique.
