Alcatraz: Jail Break

This is a great warm-up for defensive and evasion sessions, or it might even be a warm-up that helps you reinforce coaching points made during a previous session. The best bit is that it's fun and relevant to all ages. If you're coaching tag rugby, change the warm-up exercise from contact to tags. One team runs clockwise round the inside of the circle with the other team running anti-clockwise around the outside of the circle. The circle in this case is marked out using blue cones, but you can use whatever colour you like. When the coach shouts 'Jailbreak' the players inside the inner circle try to 'escape' to outside the 10m x 10m square (yellow cones). The size of the square and distance from the circle is a suggestion, play with it a little and let us know your variations! The inside team scores a point for each 'jailbreaker' - swap over. If you have an odd number of players give the defenders the extra man.

Groups of 3.  Ball One player performs a tackle on his knees.  The ball carrier works to manage the contact area by using footwork/fend.  Aim is try work aorund a question mark shape - to get line of sight to support runner.  Try to keep to hands on the ball before giving the pop/pass.  Support runner must tempo run to time his suport line correctly come in narrow so the pop isnt hard.

Handling in channels 3

Can evolve drilled by having 3 versus 2 in the wide channel. Start off with defenders being passive in order for attacking success and to develop their hands some pressure. In small channel; ball presentation and defenders now more active in wide channel. Make sure skills are performed accurately (long presentation on floor). Offloading in the tackle in the short channel is time. Make sure the support players come at speed and close to the offloader.

One Touch Ruck

Be brief when telling the players the laws of this game, it's important to get them moving quickly. This is not a contact game. Break your players into two teams, giving each team their own colour of bibs if necessary. One team goes to attack, and one to defense. Nominate a Scrum Half for each team. There is no kicking in this game. Normal laws of rugby apply e.g. a forward pass will result in the ball being turned over to the opposition. If an attacking player is touched: they must go to ground, present the ball, two of their teammates ruck over (staying over the ball), and the Scrum Half moves the ball for the next phase of attack. When you start playing this game make sure that the defense is employing your defensive pattern around the ruck. As the game develops consider telling the defenders that they must have one or more players at the back of the ruck, if they are not fast enough to do this - push them back 10 meters. Have attacking players do what they normally would at the ruck. Depending on your goals decide on the number of touches you wish to allow e.g. unlimited is not a bad option as mistakes will be made! Don't hesitate to shape the game to focus on your session goals, and let us and other coaches know what worked for you!

Tell the players the following...... Runners move forward towards the cone opposite to their location. There will be one ball carrier and one reciever in every set of runners, 3 sets of runners at any one time. The ball carrier must make a legal pass to the player approaching, avoiding traffic. That's it - lets get going.

Progression in ruck

In groups of four, the ball carrier runs out, turns and passes the ball to the second player. The first player then becomes a defender. Player 2 goes into contact and tries to drive the defender forward but when stopped, slides down to ground and presents the ball. Player 3 then drives over player 2, clearing the defender out of the way. Player 4 picks up the ball and runs on to the end where the drill is restarted running back down the grid

To practice and develop ball Presentation.

Grid 10x10Numbers 18+Ages: 9+Balls: 61) Run across and place ball down about 1 metre in front of player on other side of grid.2) Player straddles ball - picks it up - holds it close to back shoulder - runs low across to other side of grid - places ball 1 metre in front of next player.3) As above but roll ball in gently rather than place down.

Players form a single file, pick up a ball, run a few meters and then places the ball down before heading towards the next ball. The balls are placed at random in the grid area. The second player starts out when the first player has placed down the first ball, and so on. Players rejoins the end of the line after placing down the last ball.

In groups of 4 inside the grid with 1 ball per group. Players should pass the ball around the group with small pops. On the coach's whistle the player with the ball takes the ball into contact and hits the floor. Other players must then seal-clear-pick. After picking the ball players can continue to pop pass the ball until they hear the next whistle.

Ball carrier runs in to one defender and places the ball, once placed, he gets to his feet quickly and runs into the next defender doing the same. This process can continue for as short or as long as you like, a good challenge would be 30 second limit to get in as many hits and ball placements as possible.

On the command, the players run into the shield and spins to their right before joining the back of the group on the left hand side. The practice keeps repeating. A circle must be set up for player/coach to walk around. The players must be in pairs with one been the attacker and the other the defender. Both players start stomach down however the defender is on top of the attacker and must work to stay on top of the attacker. The coach/player walks around the circle shouting ‘set’ at 10-15 second intervals, at the command ‘set’ the attacker must move and present the ball with both balls towards the coach/player.

Give each training area one ball to start with and tell the players the following...... Lets just get the ball moving down the line. Give the player at the start of one of the lines a ball, tell the line to advance using lateral passing - with the last player in each line passing the ball to the first player in the opposite line. Players should change positions in the line following each attack. Focus on the coaching points - the drill is only a means to an end. When you feel that the players are executing the short pass to your satisfaction - add in more pressure by having two opposite lines run at once.

Quick Ball/ Offload Touch Tag ...

Once an attacker is touched they must offload within one second. You can start the game so that players have to pass the ball in front of defenders and then later progress the drill and ask them to pass from behind the defence, by taking two steps past the defender, before offloading. Question players on what they consider to be the most effective option when attacking?

coaching under 9s next year, where do I start?

Hi, I’m coaching under 9s next year which involves tackling, mauls, rucks etc. I’m after advise on what to coach first and the amount of time spent on each area. Added to this I’ve somehow become the lead coach after a couple of coaches stepped down (feeling a little under pressure!)
