Rugby: side stepping

Start with 2 players on the centre cone, each with a ball, and facing each other. On the shout "GO", they both run backwards to the first cone They then side step up the grid to the second cone Next players run through the slalom cones back to the start where the ball is passed to the next players Next players can only go when each player has received a ball (to ensure each race is fair).

The first player runs around the red cone and back down to the start of the slalom. There the player zig-zags up the slalom, then back down before running around the second red cone and down to the second group of players where the ball is passed to the next player Important no more then a max of 3 players per slalom to make sure that there is lots of activity.

Tell your players the following... The first player runs into the grid, the ball carrier. They attack the inner square. When they get into that square, they then pass to a player either on their left or right before following their pass and taking the place of the receiver on the cone. The receiving player then runs into the grid and passes (left or right) before following their pass once again. Passes should be legal.

Tell the players the following: On your whistle the ball carrier and the support player come forward off their cones. The ball carrier passes the ball to either their left or right (not forward). It is easier to decide the pass direction and roles in advance e.g. one ball will always travel left - and one ball will always travel right. When a ball carrier has finished their pass - they join the end of the opposite line. Players keep working within the Wide grid until you should tight, they then move into the inner grid. In this grid space is very limited and players will pop the ball (again not forward). Players keep working within the inner grid until told to move out wide again. Keep the tempo high and have fun.

Simple game for players to work on their ability to side step and beat opponents 1 v 1.The defender starts with the ball on one coned corner of the playing area.The defender passes the ball to the attacker standing on the opposite cone.The game is then a 1 v 1 and the attacker must side step the defender to reach one side of the squared area.

Coach calls a number, that player acts as a defender. Attacker tries to score without being tagged using one of the three S (Speed, Swerve, and Sidestep)

Players need to work their way up the cones, moving from one leg to another, winding up by bending at the knee and hips, and exploding off to the other direction.

Either from standing start or from receiving pass the player should look to fake, side-step or dummyAfter having done this they should now accelerate hard over 5-10m.

Put a number of cones in the grid.<br>Players have to swerve round them / sidestep them / go to left and right of them. <br><br>Put two more ball in when competent.

From the start position, run forwards out of the 1st set of cones, then side-step to the left to go around the far left cone.<BR>From the far left cone, head back towards the centre set of cones in the course.<BR>Run out form the centre set of cones, this time side-stepping to the right around the far right cone and then heading back throght the last set of cones to the finish.

The player with the ball passes to the next player and follows the direction of the ball using a side step. The player who receives the ball does the same and so on to the last player who receives the ball and runs around the group to the first cone and restarts the drill.

Tell players the following.... Each Player will work individually, unless told otherwise. Players can run in any direction: moving forward or side to side. They must remain within the grid trying to avoid contact by running into space, sidestepping for example. They will have a ball each. When the coach calls stop, all players must be at least 1m from the nearest player. From time to time players will be ask to do things e.g. 1 press-up. Following completing the instruction - players should keep moving. You will be asked to pass your ball - before doing anything make sure you communicate with another player, you agree to pass to each other, and then you make the pass! This part of your warm-up should be no more than five minutes.

Side on: one hand Same again but no stand side on. 3. One step: two hands Same distance apart, introduce the second hand and take a step and pass try to do 10 off each hand.

Run to the first cone at 3/4 pace.Upon reaching the first cone perform a slight side step and change direction.Continue to accelerate to the 2nd cone, once again using a slight side step/ change of direction before finishing with a 100% sprint.
