Defensive session warm up for recognizing cues on pressing. Set up 4 cones 10 yards apart. Place equal number of players around each cone. Coach plays initial ball in and then any reset balls. coach plays ball in to player A. player A takes a touch then passes to player C on their right while player B closes in and presses. After player A passes to right they run left to go in back of line. player C takes a touch and passes to the right to the next player in player B's line. player D closes and presses on player C as soon as the ball is passed to them. player C runs left to get in back of line. play continues around the grid
As soon as the pass is made the defensive player must sprint to close down the space. Once the player get within a couple of steps they must stop and take a defensive stance. Switch directions part way through. Progress by allowing the receiving player to choose which side to pass. Recognize signs of which side the player passing will go. Recognize weak foot of player and force play to that side.
