Rings are placed in front of the player. The player rallies with the coach/player and has to perform split step inside the rings before each shot.
Split step is a basic skills that all tennis players have to master. By performing little jump at the appropriate time, the player is able to react quicker to the ball so he has more time for decision, preparation, and execution. By placing visual objects on the court, players are constantly aware of the task so the quality is maintained, even while playing for longer periods.
In this drill the player works on split step skill. Rings are placed to show proper position behind the baseline after the shot. Players should focus to keep consistent rally to have a lot of opportunities to work on split step. This drill is especially effective at the beginning of practice because it doesn't force players to move a lot but it forces them to focus 100% on the task.
