Hi allOver the weekend I coached my U18s and we did well but I wanted to find out, is there any tactics, coaching sessions for indoor hockey to help defend in different structures or heck even stop attackers from getting their angles right0
Hi Damien,
Certainly, defending in indoor hockey requires specific strategies and techniques due to the fast-paced nature and confined space of the game. Here are some tactics and coaching sessions that can help your U18s improve their defense in indoor hockey:
Zonal Defense:
Teach your players to defend in specific zones to cover key areas of the court. Emphasize communication and quick transitions between zones to close down attackers.
Pressure on the Ball:
Train your players to put pressure on the ball carrier as soon as they enter your defensive zone. This can disrupt the opponent's flow and force them into making mistakes.
Deny Shooting Angles:
Focus on denying attackers the space to take clear shots. Teach your defenders to close down angles effectively, forcing opponents into less dangerous shooting positions.
Compact Formation:
Emphasize the importance of maintaining a compact defensive formation. This minimizes gaps for attackers to exploit and makes it harder for them to navigate through your defense.
Man-to-Man Marking:
While maintaining a zonal approach, there will be situations where man-to-man marking is crucial. Teach your players when to switch between zonal and man-to-man marking based on the situation.
Quick Transitions:
Practice rapid transitions from defense to offense. As soon as your team regains possession, encourage fast and accurate passes to exploit any gaps left by the opponents.
Hope this helps.
