I'm doing an expo project on hockey goalkeepers and I want to know if there is a need for a basic training guide for beginers eg. goalies for dummies
Yes I beleive that there is a need. I coach U13 rep level and see all to often junior keepers in the box with no understanding of the basics that you need. Being a goal keeper myself I get called upon to do a lot of keeper training where if there was a guide to this most coaches would be able to do it themselves.
In our league which is a learning league, we use back D to cover, There is no goal keeper. If back D engages then front D takes over for back D. Then they switch back when ball is near the 50. Hope this helps.

Definitely!I am a teacher and we play with goalkeepers from Year 4 (age 7/8). Am always looking for basci drills to get the pupils started. How do you start encouraging them to get down on the floor!!!!
Personally I think there is a great need for goalkeeper specific guides for all sports, but definitiely think hockey could benefit from being able to teach new players (or players wanting a refresh) the absolute basics to provide a safe and better standard for goalkeepers.
We had a new ladies keeper last year and she is 19, but not played before. I had been on a brief coaching course that Simon Mason had run and so was able to spend some time with her to get her up and running, but had it not been for that, it woudl have been very difficult to create any form of set plan on how to teach her the basics.
As a whole, I think that implementing a standard guide to gaolkeeping that can be picked up at youth level would help to improve the sport overall. Better keepers, means better players as i like to think.
I understand that there is now a new coaching tier, for goalkeeping coaching specifically, but with some of the less structured clubs, I cant see there being a specialist goalkeeping coach to provide basics or general training.
Overall, if there was a guide... I would use it within our club and distribute it amongst the keepers.
Thank you for all the people, who answered my question it helps me a lot
