Please could someone tell me the principles of transferring the ball. I can use the drills on here and some I have already used. However I would like my players to be "able to create own" if they know the princimples
Hi Wendy,
Transferring the ball comes from the idea of possession. If the opposition team has cut off viable attacking options, the idea of transferring is to bring the ball out of the busy area and move it across the pitch on the hope to find space. This will force the defense to move across.
Sometimes it may take a number of transfers to find a suitable gap to attack into. The idea is to create an overload (where your attackers outnumber the defenders in an area) by moving the ball across the entire width of the pitch.
A quick note, transferring the ball has become the standard way to play hockey, and is coached from a young age. I agree with this philosophy but do believe it has got to the stage where teams don't know when to break out of the transfer and utilise the created space. Whenever coaching the idea of transferring, make sure to emphasise that if a gap has been created - that your team should try to use it!
Let me know your thoughts, or if anything is unclear,
Josh
Principal of transferring the ball is very simple.....whenever the attacker feels that number of defence is over...the attacker should transfer the attack from left to right or right to left

in more ways than one
A few weeks into the league season, poor first touches are costing teams the ball. Coach body shape, scanning and receiving on the move to keep possession.
Pre-season fitness fades fast once the league starts. Build conditioning into ball work and use rolling subs well to keep your squad sharp all season.
The first weeks of the season decide whether a junior or new player sticks with adult hockey. Here is how to keep them safe, give them a clear job and build their confidence from the very first bully.
