Hey there everyone. I'm taking on a head coaching role for a collegiate women's side that is about 35-40 players deep. I'm looking for any general planning strategy that can maximize keeping everyone engaged and active in the practice with as little standing around as possible. Any tips or way ahead is greatly appreciated, cheers.
Hi Bob,
Congratulations on your new coaching role! Managing a large group of players can be challenging, but with effective planning and organization, you can keep everyone engaged and active. Here are some strategies to help you maximize participation:
Small-Sided Games: Incorporate small-sided games into your practices. These games are more dynamic and involve more players at once, reducing downtime. They also provide ample opportunities for skill development in a game-like setting.
Skill Circuits: Create skill circuits where players move through different skill stations in a circuit format. This keeps everyone active and allows you to address multiple aspects of the game in a single practice session.
Time Management: Plan your practices with specific time blocks for different activities. Clearly communicate the schedule to the players so they know what to expect.
Rotate Positions: During drills and exercises, encourage players to rotate positions. This not only keeps everyone engaged but also helps players develop a more comprehensive understanding of the game.
Game-Based Scenarios: Structure drills and activities that mimic real-game scenarios. This helps players understand the practical application of their skills and keeps the focus on the game rather than isolated drills.
Feedback and Interaction: Provide regular feedback to players and encourage open communication. Players are more likely to stay engaged when they feel their efforts are recognized and when they can actively contribute to discussions.
Remember to be flexible and adapt your plans based on the needs and dynamics of your team.
Hope this helps,
Archie
