I am looking for some drills and moves to coach a counter offensive against a rushed defence or a blitzing defence. I've had ideas of short kicks over the top.
Hi Tom,
To counter a rushed or blitzing defence, you can implement specific moves and strategies. Here are some options:
Kick Behind: If the defenders are rushing up too quickly, a well-placed grubber kick or chip kick behind the defensive line can put pressure on the opposition and potentially regain possession.
Hard Lines: It's important your plays have options running hard and short off ball carriers, there should also be an option to play a player out the back. A simple example of this is the 13 running hard and 12 out of the back. This will hold the defensive line and the carrier can either hit the hard runner to break through a rushing defence or play out of the back and make it easier to find an edge.
Switch Play: Change the direction of attack by switching the ball quickly to the other side of the field. This can catch the blitzing defenders off-guard as they may have committed to one side.
Inside Ball: Have a forward take an inside line off the fly-half or another back, using deception to break through the rushing defence. The forward can take a short pass and exploit gaps in the defence.
Hope this helps.
