How can the Elv's help my team playing against more physical opposition at the rucks , scrums and mauls?
Tyrone
The ELV's will finally be decided on, on May 16 and in the next newsletter I will be able to point you to the new Laws website which will help you estimate how the new laws can be used to benefit your team.
In the meantime, perhaps your team could work on pulling down the mauls by the bigger opposition (by pulling them down holding them between shoulders and waist) and also to work on keeping the ball away from contact as much as possible.
At the lineout, ensure your jumpers explode up so the ball is there for them when they arrive in the air and they are not waiting. This will ensure the heavier opposition jumpers arrive up only when the linout has already been won!
In scrums - go for as low as possible (shoulders above waist) and work on quick, channel one ball so that again, by the time the opposition get a shove on the ball has already gone!
They could also work on off loading in or before the tackle to create a fast moving and constantly changing point of attack. The larger opposition forwards will find it hard to keep up and gaps will appear!
This all worked for me last season and we ended up winning the last 8 League games on the trot and dominating much bigger forwards!
Good luck
Simon
