I would like to have a GOAL planning session and not sure what type of goals should be set for players over the season. We have a long term goal to be promoted but not sure how to set up shorter goals and what to advise people if they can think of any!!!

You may wish to call your players together and by asking them the right questions get them to agree on a long term goal for the season e.g. promotion!
But players won't win games because they want to win the league. Thats too far away and they know that it all may go wrong anyway. So get them to focus on individual performance goals. These they can achieve and, if you have agreed the right ones with them, winning the league becomes a by product!
A performance goal for an open side flanker could be making 8 tackles in the next game. The key is to get the player to set the targets and you make sure they are realistic and achievable.
If you do this with all your players you will have a highly motivated squad who, in all likelhood, will be winners.
Don't forget to reset the performance goals as the season goes on. In a previous newsletter we discussed doing this every 6 weeks.
I hope this has helped you.
