Please can someone explain the benefits of a Drift defense and why or what situation you would use it.
Andy
The main advantage of drift defense is that by pushing attackers across the field you use the touchline as an extra defender. The key is to make sure the defenders run towards the inside shoulder of the attacking player a) to make sure they can't step back inside and b) to push them towards the player they are passing towards.
If all defenders communicate effectively and succeed in pushing the attackers across then the attackers run out of room and options. The attached practice shows this although the film is a little hard to see.
A lot of teams use this defense but revert to the safer man for man in their own 22.
I hope this has helped you.
