What drill can I use to get U8s to retreat to an onside position after the tag and line up defensively
You can set the players on a line with a ball and 1 cone behind each one by 1 meter. Everyone passing must run behind and jog around the cones.
Players undrestand, when passing the ball they must retreat.
I found that counting out loud after a tag started to get them to think about where they were supposed to be. So when reffing in a training match, you shout 'Tag' then count 1,2,3. Then freeze the game. You then get everyone to look to see where they are standing.
Get them back into their desired places and then start the game again and repeat. After a bit you tell them to count, and then tell them to count in their head - i.e. you gradually take away the 'security blanket'.
Theyu then learn that 'Tag' means that they have 3 seconds to get back into position. It worked a treat for us.
