hi I help coach a under nines team where the bulk of the team are constantly trying to run through tackle after tackle.when we talk to them they all understand about off loading the ball to avoid the seven tackle turnover, but as soon as on the pitch try line fever sets in.any ideas to encourage passing of the ball
Hi buddy, I coach children from ages 2 plus and ive seen this happen alot in either tag rugby, club rugby with teenagers and also adults. What I do is get defenders with tackle shields have them run into one but set a target for the offload. It works and they start to visualize a danger area around each opposition player. Hope it helps.
We use a game were the boys go into a small square say 5 m x 5m 5 players per team.the ball carriers can pass the ball in any direction and when they have passed they move into space.10 pass turnover. The defending team look to deny space and intercept the ball or maul if they catch player in possession
We have recently had the same issue and have overcome it by playing walking touch. Same rules a normal touch but players can only walk and not run. The boys soon picked up that they can move the ball quicker than they can walk and therefore started passing more. This has led to more passing in the contact game with some very impressive results. Even parents have commented how the passing game has come on and what great passing rugby they are playing.

Warde here is one for you if your team is awarded a penalty if your player picks up the ball and turns to the ref and discretly says he is not going for goal but is pointing to the goals with ball in hand the opposition will certainly be caught off guard as for a few seconds they will think the kick is on your ball carrier must work quickly from then on with a group of 4 runners ready to attack regards jeff Simm RFU level 3 coach
