Ball on Ball

In pairs, both players have a ball. One of the players has to try and make the ball make contact with the other players ball. On achieving this, players roles reverse.

Eliminating a Player

Drag Flick - Stage 1

Place the ball on the penalty spot. Sit down on both knees (slightly ahead of the ball). Drag the ball from this position into the goal.

Video Techniques

Far post goal

The player on the left passes the ball into the path of the player on the right. When this player receives the ball they continue to run with with it before passing the ball to the player on the far post who then has shot on goal. The player passing to the far post continues to run after their pass and takes up a new position by the right post. The practice can now start again from the other side.

Shooting & Goalscoring

Push

Grip: Hands apart but similar 'double V grip' to the hitting technique. Head: The head should be positioned over the right foot as the player starts to push the ball. The head will finish well over the left foot once the follow through has been completed. Ball: Almost a full stick length away from the body. The ball should start in front of the right foot and will be released when it has passed the left foot. Keep the stick in contact with the ball for as long as possible. A good follow through technique will see the head of the stick pointing at the intended target. On the move: Players should use the 'cross-over' step where the penultimate step is the right foot crossing behind the left foot. This motion allows the player to stay in a low position throughout the push. Keeping both feet on the ground when in contact with the ball will help the player stay balanced throughout the pushing technique, and will help the transfer of weight from right foot to left.

Passing & Receiving

Reverse Drag Relay

Player 1 runs up to the 2 cones and  reverse stick drags the ball through them before then running to the far cone. When they reach the far cone they pass to the next player and join the back of that queue. To add an element of competition you can line up two teams side by side and see which team is first to complete the drill.

Reverse stick at this level the reverse stick is used to transfer the ball from left to right and not as a separate technique

Player 1 starts by running with the ball to the right hand cone, keeping the ball in contact with the stick. The player opposite them holds their stick above their head. On lowering the stick to the floor the player must pass the ball to the next player (Red Player 1). When the red number 1 receives the ball they mirror the move coming from either direction.

Coach's objective: To promote forward vision and awareness of space Purpose: To escape through the free gate<br /> <br />Structure: Players work in threes. The receiver collects a pass from behind. As the pass is played, the defender moves from their starting cone through either of the gates in an attempt to tackle the receiver. The receiver must run through the unmarked gate with the ball under control

Set out the grid as shown with 2 goals either side of the defender. 1 player starts with the ball and has to run into contact with the defender (draw the defender) on doing so the player with the ball can decide to continue and try to run round the defender or turn away from the defender keeping possession of the ball and pass the ball to the supporting player who is only allowed to come into the grid and help if they have received the ball. Now the 2 player can play a 2 v 1 and try to score a goal.

Grips will change for different skills performed. <br />When you are moving off the ball, the stick should be carried in front of the body with the head pointing to the ground ready to make contact with the ball.

King Ball Conditioned Games - ...

This is a game where you learn to pass the ball beyond defenders, to players in space. No aerial ball allowed. Two teams positioned either side of the 23m line. One player from each team goes to the end zone behind the opposing team. The team with the ball has to try and pass the ball into the end zone behind the defence. Whoever makes the successful pass can join the player in the end zone. The aim of the game is to be the first team to have all their players in the end zone behind the opposition. The ball can only be won by the opposition intercepting a ball on the way to the end zone or back.

Place the stick behind the ball and push. There should be NO NOISE on contact. Start with the ball in line with the right foot as this allows for maximum weight transfer. Endeavour to keep eyes up throughout stroke and stick. In contact, feel the ball. This may be difficult initially but will pay dividends with your potential high achievers as it will let them see a defenders late movement and allow them to make adjustments. Tip: Place the right foot on a line. Start the ball on the same line.

The player with the ball runs around the cone before then trying to pass the ball to the player standing behind the defender. To get the ball past the defender players should dummy and try to pass past the left foot of the defender. The receiving player has to run the ball around the cone before attempting to pass the ball back to the other side. If the defender intercepts the ball players must change roles.

Player 1 passes the ball to player 2 who passes the ball to player 3. Player 3 passes the ball to player 1 who is running at the ball, turns on receiving the ball and runs into the circle to shoot.<br /><br />The next player 1 passes the ball to 2, but this time player 2 passes to player 4 etc.<br /><br />Player 2 stays and the rest of the players swap each time.

Put out 2 cones (on a line if possible) about 2 - 5 meter apart player with a ball each stand one side of the line and the ball on the other side. The practice is for the players to start with the stick head pointing down, flat side in contact with the ball and holding the stick with the left hand only. They have to walk the ball to the other cone on reaching the cone the player turns the stick swaps hands and walks the ball back.

The worker player makes a run around the outside of the channel. The passer times their pass so that the worker player can run onto the ball inside the channel. The worker player then dribbles out of the channel and into the circle for a strike on goal.

Technical Emphasis<br />1) Side on position when receiving from behind so that both you and the passer can see where the defender is, and make appropriate decisions based on this.<br />2) Sudden move to receive.<br />3) Receive the pass in front of the body to see the next pass forwards.<br />4) Arrive at the place you want the ball as the ball arrives. If you are waiting for the ball to arrive a defender will be able to recover.<br />5) Carry the ball out in front to see passes.<br />6) Keep constant contact with the ball when carrying it to enable the pass to be delivered quickly.<br /><br />Practices- Defender 1 dribbles at pace.<br />- Defender 2 leads out.<br />- Defender 3 gets free lead to receive from defender 2&amp;apos;s cross.<br />- Defender 3 shoots.<br />- All players move round one spot.

Player 2 has to run onto the moving ball collect and keep moving to pass the ball back to the other side .for player 3 to run onto the ball. Each player has to run to the back of the opposite side each time they have passed the ball.

Can't print any of the drills

You charged me for a membership and I can't print the drills it says I can print, it just keeps preparing pdf and not doing anything, I've printed maybe 8 drills so far total for a month of use, that's ridiculous, either fix it or I need to "speak" to someone about getting a refund, the whole point was to be able to print the drills I needed and you are literally taking money from me and not following thru on your membership benefits which is international fraud.

Why does the ball bounce when ...

Hi, When I add power to my slap hit the ball tends to be hard but quite bouncy. Any ideas on what could be causing this as it stops me using it as a pass. If I "stun" the ball (i.e. use an abbreviated follow through) the ball tends to stay flat but obviously loses a lot of power. Also, if I deliberately choose a contact point much higher up the stick that also seems to keep it flatter but power is also lost here too. Any help appreciated. Mark

I'm a new Varsity head coach a...

Hi all- I am 37 years old. I played field hockey for 3 years only (in high school). As you can imagine, I'm not very good/experienced. I was a competitive soccer player which made me good enough athletically to play field hockey but anyway, the point is: I never played field hockey at a high level.I now find myself in a head coaching position. (Long story-I did coach some field hockey some years ago and had a blast but it was a while back). Anyway, I have three assistant coaches who aren't much more experienced than I am. Our high school program is VERY weak and so nobody really steps up to coach there.Basically, my question is: what do I do? I have some girls who have played but not much. Then I have girls who literally don't know how to hold their stick and are quite I athletic. We barely have enough girls to field a team. As for drills, I'm trying to use this site but if you were in my position, what specifically would you be doing with these girls so they don't lose 7-0 every game? Right now, I'm focusing on body control and comfort with the ball- (we are playing possession and they are so uncomfortable they just hit the ball away because they don't have the skills to hold).
