1st man at the ruck

Ball. Groups of 3+ 2 attackers line up infront of a defender. The 1st attackers takes the ball into contact The defender makes a low chop tackle. The 2nd attacker resposibility is to clear away the tackler from the contact area and look after the ball. Progression : Add second defedner with a tack;e nag to test the stability of the clearer.

3 man building the scrum

Setting the front row is the building blocks for a scrum. The 3 players (Prop, Hooker, Prop) should stand in a line facing the opposition. Two props tuck in close to the hooker either-side, wrapping their inside are around the hookers shorts or T-shirt maintaining a strong and tight grip. (Reach as far around the hooker as possible so the shorts or t-shirt are tight. This should pull the hooker in tight to both props hips. The hooker then lowers arms from above his head and wraps them around the 2 props, pulling tight onto their tshirts. Hooker needs flexibility to move hi slower body to hook the ball. Once set, the players sink from their hips as a unit - usually with a call routine. Then they wait for the refs calls to crouch, touch, engage. Where they use explosive leg drive while maintaining ga flat back and strong core to push the other props off the ball. Body height is key.

Breakdown Touch

2 teams. Half pitch Ball - A normal game of touch, however with conditions. - When a touch is mae the attakcer must go down and complete a long placement. - The toucher must run and touch own tryline before continuing play. -A Second attacker must come over in a short period of time and secure the ball. - If a defneder manages to gewt to the ball before a attacking player secures it, it is a turnover. -Then play away.

Groups of 3+ Bag Sausage 2 player starts on his chest infront of the sausage, another player lines up opposite. When whistle is blown, the first player makes a chop tackle on the bag and rolls out the way. The second defender then then spider carwls over the sausage and clears the incoming bag holder.

Groups of 2 Bags Balls Contact conditioning 1. Body height clear out work In there groups, do contact hits on each shoulder. Stand 2m apart and take turns doing hits against bag 2. Crocodile role One player lies on top of a tackle sausage (long way round), the group of 4 take turns swapping roles of being tackled and tackler. Focus is the crocodile role. 3. Clear out. One player stands over the top of tackle bag competing for the ball. Other player arrives from 2m away to clear out the player, to prevent the threat of stealing the ball. 3. Bounce and compete Players lay either side of the a ball. When whistle goes, both players bounce off the floor, one competes for the ball while the other focuses on clear out or crocodile role. Do 3 sets of 2mins. Repetitive drill.

NSW - Warratahs Tackle Technique

Groups 6+ Cones. Balls 1. Warm up - Non Contact. Players start on the corner of a square grid. They then in turn run to meet in the middle of the square. The Attacker side steps, while defender tries to get a shoulders on contact on the attacker. 2. Contact introduced - Attakcing Player Focus. Attacking player after being tackled must land on top of the ball. Then must release the ball, then fire up as quickly as possible to re-gather the ball and keep running. 3. Focus on the defender. After making a good tackle, with focus on body height, squeeze and foot in close, the defender must return to feet as quiclkly as possible to compete for the ball again.

Rugby Pinball

This game is designed to teach the players about body height in tackling and ruck clean out. Set up a field about 15m long by 10m wide. Keep it narrow to give the defenders a better chance at catching the runners. Tell all the players to line up at one end facing back down the playing field. Choose 2 players to stand in the middle and tell them they are the defenders who have to tackle any runners before they reach the other side. Explain to the runners they have to run from one end to the other without getting tackled by the defenders. If a runner gets tackled they must stop exactly where they were tackled and stand on that spot. They are called bashers and cannot move their feet until the game is finished. The bashers can, however, push runners over if they come close enough to reach (bashers cannot move their feet so a good strong stance is necessary). If a runner is pushed over by a basher he/she becomes a basher too. Once the runners have made it through to the other end the bashers and tacklers turn around to face the runners and on the coaches call the run through again. This continues until there are no more runners and the last runner wins.

Groups of 3/4 1 Tackle Sausage. 1 Tackle bag. 1. Tackle Bag conditioning. Players align 6m apart, one side with tackle sausage. Work for 1 min constantly tackling and carrying sausage back and forth with partners. 2. Tackle and Roll conditioning. Same as before but introduce roll after making the hit. Roll with bag to escpae collision area. then same as before, pick up the sausage and run. 3. Add Defender A 3rd player is introduced, holding Tackle bag who acts as a attacker clearing out the ruck. The Defender must bounce up and clear the tackle bag player coming over the ball, then same as before. 4. Tackle, Roll, Clear All 4 stages togther now, adding a roll in before clearing out the attakcing player with tackle bag.

The game is a normal game of touch, however when a touch is made, both ball carrier and defender put their chests to the floor. They then bounce back up, for the defender to make a low chop tackle. This takes out alot of the power of the colision and means the defender can focus more on technique.

Groups of 2 Ball Hands and arms are introduced. The attacker holds hands behind his back with the ball. The Defender does a shoulder hit, and starts to drive his legs (previous 2 stages).Then there arms from being in tight to there chest (boxer) explode around the attacker, aiming to dislodge the ball. This will add impact and explosivenesss to the hit.

This exercise is designed to improve quick handling and passing off both hands.Set out four cones in a zig zag shape, with at least two players on each cone.The player on the end cone starts with the ball, and takes a couple of steps forward before passing to the player diagonal to them.This continues along the line. When the player at the other end collects the ball, they pass to the player on the cone next to them (the ball had just arrived from a player on that cone).
