Community | Batting, Punching the Gaps & Running Between the Wickets & Fielding Game Simulation

February 2026 Sportplan Coaching

The gap between training and match performance narrows when practice replicates game conditions. Match simulation training combines technical work with tactical decision-making, pressure management, and competitive scenarios. This approach develops players who can transfer practice skills into match situations.

Creating Match Conditions

Replicating game pressure:

Scoreboard pressure: Setting targets and scenarios that demand specific performance.

Time constraints: Creating urgency through limited overs or time.

Consequences: Meaningful outcomes for success and failure in practice.

Crowd simulation: Adding noise and distraction to build concentration.

Scenario-Based Practice

Chasing targets: Required run rates and wickets in hand scenarios.

Defending totals: Death bowling practice with specific runs to defend.

Powerplay practice: Batting and bowling in field restriction periods.

Partnership building: Batting together under various match situations.

Modified Games

Pairs cricket: All players bat and bowl with cumulative scoring.

Continuous cricket: Fast-paced games with immediate transitions.

Last man stands: Pressure finishing with the tail.

Diamond cricket: Adapted format for smaller groups and spaces.

Decision-Making Development

Reading situations: Assessing match state and choosing appropriate tactics.

Shot selection: Matching stroke play to game requirements.

Bowling variations: Choosing deliveries based on match context.

Captain's choices: Field settings and bowling changes under pressure.

Key Coaching Points

  • Practice should feel like matches as often as possible
  • Scenarios create purpose and focus in training
  • Modified games maintain engagement while developing skills
  • Decision-making improves through repeated game situations
  • Competitive training builds mental toughness

DESCRIPTION

Aim: - Is to promote batsmen to place the ball into the gaps OR dropping the ball and calling YES or NO and running quick singles if there is a run to take. - Boundary hitting is not the objective in this drill so emphasis to batters to place the ball in gaps for singles (or 2's & 3's if on) OR quick singles. - Played on outfield or grassed area using tennis ball or softer junior cricket ball. - Alternative option using artificial turf wicket with hard ball & batting gear. - 9 players inc keeper & 2 batters & 6 fielders. (Can use 10 or 11 players by adding more fielding positions. - Fielding Positions as shown but can be changed according to coach's training requirements. - Coach is Bowler.

COACHING POINTS

Batting in pairs. Place fielders in their positions (rotate during simulation). Coach bowls to striker. Striker aims to play an according shot to delivery either punching the gap OR dropping ball in short in infield and calling YES or NO. Call of yes batters run a quick single, (OR multiple runs if on to take). Note to batting pair rules of calling (eg Striker is ball is in front of wicket to Non-striker if ball is behind square). Fielders walking in with bowler, on their toes in attacking the ball simulation. Fielders throw to end where run out might be on OR if no run out throw to keepers end.
