February 2026 Sportplan Coaching

The gap between training and match performance narrows when practice replicates game conditions. Match simulation training combines technical work with tactical decision-making, pressure management, and competitive scenarios. This approach develops players who can transfer practice skills into match situations.

Creating Match Conditions

Replicating game pressure:

Scoreboard pressure: Setting targets and scenarios that demand specific performance.

Time constraints: Creating urgency through limited overs or time.

Consequences: Meaningful outcomes for success and failure in practice.

Crowd simulation: Adding noise and distraction to build concentration.

Scenario-Based Practice

Chasing targets: Required run rates and wickets in hand scenarios.

Defending totals: Death bowling practice with specific runs to defend.

Powerplay practice: Batting and bowling in field restriction periods.

Partnership building: Batting together under various match situations.

Modified Games

Pairs cricket: All players bat and bowl with cumulative scoring.

Continuous cricket: Fast-paced games with immediate transitions.

Last man stands: Pressure finishing with the tail.

Diamond cricket: Adapted format for smaller groups and spaces.

Decision-Making Development

Reading situations: Assessing match state and choosing appropriate tactics.

Shot selection: Matching stroke play to game requirements.

Bowling variations: Choosing deliveries based on match context.

Captain's choices: Field settings and bowling changes under pressure.

DESCRIPTION

rapid fire cricket set up 5 or 6 windballs or tennis balls on batting tees between 2 cones approx 5m apart. Set up 2 sets of stumps approx 2m behind the balls, 15m apart. and 2 target cones or single stumps approx 20-30 meters in front of the balls (depending on age group). Fielders stand between between target cones/single stumps. Batter tries to hit each ball between target, fielders try to stop balls. Every ball through or over target scores 4. Catch is minus 10. After hitting all balls batter runs between stumps set up behind him/her. Meanwhile, fielders retrieve and then set up balls and tees between cones for the next batter. First batter runs until all balls and tees are back in place. Each complete run scores 1 in addition to any pimts from htting through target area protected by fielders. Safety - fielders may not come forward to start setting up until after the last ball has been hit. Fiekders must be at east 15m from the balls. 6- 8 per game, 1 batter, 1 player getting ready to bat, rest are fielders. Can also designate umpire to judge 4s and a scorer for groups up to 10. Each player gets one turn at bat, highest points wins.
