Player will wait for prompt from coach to begin the 18yd sprint (use a ball bounce or whistle). Different starting positions each time, running in this order: Standing with hands on hips Squat position with hands on hips Knelt right knee with hands on hips Knelt left knee with hands on hips Knelt on both knees with body upright with hands on hips Lying on right side with arm outstretched in front Lying on left side with arm outstretch in front Lying on front with both arms stretched in front In push-up position In push-up position with roll over to the right before sprint In push-up position with roll over to the left before sprint In a crab position ie. on hands and feet with stomach facing the sky
Player uses recovery run back to prepare for the next. Must be full sprint to make the most of the exercise. Hands are on hips so the player must use strength of legs to drive forward - this will strengthen knees and quads. To introduce a ball: Coach will serve ball in the air to the player as they near the end of their sprint - player must control the ball, or play a header, volley etc. back to the coach Alternative with ball: Coach serves the ball over the player from behind which acts as their stimulant to begin sprint. Player must get the ball under control and turn back to take a shot on goal. Recovery is then to gather the ball and bring back to the start.
