Player stands in the deuce corner. Coach feeds difficult ball to the ad side. Player hits backhand down the line on the run.

COACHING POINTS

Backhand down the line is getting more attention in modern tennis. Ability to hit aggressive backhand down the line is especially important against players who run around the backhand. Novak Djokovic is a great example of a player who shows exceptional ability in this shot.

Backhand Down The Line From The 3 Zones - Progression:

The player starts on the baseline and is fed 3 balls all to the advantage side.

The balls should be fed deep, medium and then short. The player hits all of the balls backhand down the line before moving back to the centre of the baseline and then moves forward ready for the next ball.

Backhand Drills

Approach on the run:

Coach stands on the player's side. Coach throws low ball around the service line. Player hits backhand approach shot down the line on the run.

Backhand Drills

Backhand 3 Wide Balls:

Coach stands in front of the player. Coach tosses 3 different balls to the backhand side. First ball is close to the player; second ball is between the middle and the sideline; last ball is close to the sideline. Player hits and recovers after each shot.

Backhand Drills

Backhand Live drill:

Coach feeds the ball from the forehand side of the court.

Players start in the centre and hit the first backhand back to the coach. The player should try to recover back to the centre to then move towards the short ball and hit a backhand cross-court.
