This system gives support to the backline as well as the midfield. It relies on the 2 forwards to do a lot of running in defence and play further forward when their team is in possession. When to use: If your team is very fit and want to force the other team back by creating overloads in your defence and midfield.

Roles and Responsibilities

4 Zone - 2v1 Game

2 teams play a 6v6 game, with a left and a right central zone marked out with cones. In each of the central zones there should be 1 player from each team. Players who are defending (on both teams) can only stay in their starting zones, whereas players who are attacking can run across zones to support the attack and create the overloads (2v1).

Conditioned Games

Changing 4 vs 2

Three teams of 2. Two teams combine to play against the 3rd team (in the animation this is the white and gold team playing against the blue team). If the 3rd team successfully gets the ball, the team that lost the ball is in the middle and the other two teams combine to continue.

Possession

Overload Left Indoor Hockey - ...

Pressure a weak right back, shift play. Player 2 should threaten the back post to distract the goalkeeper.

Make movement to push play down the right and to target a weak left back.

Overlap to get in behind Overl...

Only defender is allowed to leave the square and the other one has to stay in their grid and can only be leave if the other defender has returned inside their grid. The attackers have to keep possession and try to create an overlap to get a player behind the defender. Once the players have achieved this the other winger can come into the circle and receive the ball to try and score.

The compulsOry pass is a free hit from the RM to the RD. As soon as the pass is given the 3 attackers can try and score a goal. (Tip when the RM passes the ball he/she should try and run diagonally in front of the RD. RD should in turn run into the space created by the RM running out).

Right Channel Overload situati...

Player 1 passes the ball to player 2, who plays a 2v1 with player 3 through the channel. Once through, the attack becomes a 4v2 to try and score a goal. The defender in the channel stays and waits for the next attack.

3v3 to break 4 v 2 Overload si...

Set up two grids wide on the half way line. Tell the players to play 3v3 possession in the box. Have two player waiting in the 23m area. When the ball is played outside the 2 areas on the halfway line it is the team that did not push the ball out to break. The team mate on in the 23m area has to come to the ball to receive the first pass. (other player can try to defend. The player that touched the ball out of the grid is the defender that can try to stop the breaking team scoring. The other 2 players wait in the grid.

The LD takes a hit in from the side line. Their compulsory pass is to the the SW. As soon as the ball is played the 3 players with the ball have to get the ball out of the 23m area. (Tip is that one ot the 3 players with the ball always takes a position between the two defenders).

Team escape Overload situation...

Set out a pitch 3/4 length, with two lines of cones to make the pitch slightly narrower. The white team in the middle has to try and score a goal at either end against either set of defenders to get out. Every time the defence gets the ball they must give it back to the attackers who then have to attack the other side. Defenders are only allowed to defend inside the 23 m area, the defenders at the other end are not allowed to defend past the 1/2 way line.

Outletting Overload situations...

create forward passes by transferring the ball The 3 blue players are trying to pass the ball through one of the 3 goals in the middle of the area to one of the three players on the opposite side. They can do this by running with the ball, dummy passing or transferring the ball between them to draw to two defenders out of position and create space for the pass. The 2 defenders can only intercept the ball. When they do so they have to try and and pass the ball over the back line behind the 3 blue players who just lost the ball.

2v1 break Overload situations ...

One attacker and one defender stand at the top of the circle. The 2nd defender stands wide outside the 23m area and passes the ball to a 2nd attacker level in the middle of the pitch. Once they have receivied the ball this attacker can take the ball and try and score a goal using the other attacker the defender that started the exercise can run back and help prevent the 2 attackers from scoring.

Player on half way line passes the ball to nearest attacker, who, on receiving the ball will try to score a goal with the other attacker - 2v1. The defender on the half way line can run back to try and help stop the attackers scoring the goal.

4 players have to try and play the ball from one side of the area to the other by passing it between or around the 2 players in the middle area. 5 interceptions, then swap.

The practice starts each time after the coach calls which two players of the defence have to run thorugh which gate before joining in the defence again. As soon as the coach calls out the numbers the attackers can start the attack and try to exploit the overload depending on which defenders have to do the gate run. and through which gate before being able to defend.

Players get into pairs with 1 ball per pair. The player with the ball dribbles around the area until one of the two defenders in the area comes towards them. At this point they need to pull the ball back and pass to their partner. Defenders in the area are not allowed to tackle or intercept the ball, they can only put pressure on players with the ball.

With the exercise starting with a pass from the left midfield to the left wing. Defenders have to start in the circle each new attack.<BR>The attackers can only score after receiving a pass from right to left.

3 v 1 Pattern to score Overloa...

3 blue and 1 white player start from between the gates (2 cones). Set in the specific areas on the pitsh. Blue 1 starts with the ball and passes the ball to blue player 2 coming out of the gate. The defender (white) can now try to stop the players scoring. Player 2 passes the ball back to player 3 and the 3 blues continue to the goal and try to score.

The marked player has to receive the ball and try to keep possession, allowing the 2 supporting players from the half way line to run up. The ball should then be passed to one of the players, who should run into the circle with the ball. The player should then shoot or pass to score a goal.

One touch passing across the r...

Working in pairs players have to play 1 touch passes across the river (2 lines of cones about 2 meters apart). If one of the players touches the ball twice they should stop and go back, joining the queue again. This way only the players who successfully pass their way down the river can have a shot at goal (again with their first touch). Players in pairs have to try and 1st touch pass the ball across the river if one of the players touches the ball twice they should stop and come back so only if the players are successful all the way they can have a shot at goal (again with their first touch.)

Player 1 runs into the circle and if the defender does not approach, player 1 can shoot at goal. Alternatively if the defender approaches, player 1 can play a one two with player 2 and then shoot at goal.<br />Player 2 needs to run out to make him/her self available for the pass from player 1.<br />Same practice on the other side of the circle.

Conditioned Game - 6v4 Attacki...

Divide your players into two teams of 6 and split the pitch into 3 areas with each area being approximately 15 meters in height.The condition for this game is that 2 players from both teams have to stay in the top third of the pitch (the opposition's scoring area) and cannot run back to offer support in the defence.This creates the 5v3 overload situation and should result in a high scoring game.

The player with the ball runs around the cone before then trying to pass the ball to the player standing behind the defender. To get the ball past the defender players should dummy and try to pass past the left foot of the defender. The receiving player has to run the ball around the cone before attempting to pass the ball back to the other side. If the defender intercepts the ball players must change roles.

How can I get my midfielders' mentality right so they defend and attack in a game?

So I'm having trouble getting my young and inexperienced group of midfielders to flip the switch from defense to offense, and back, as we move up and down the field. They will often hang back and leave my forwards stranded rather than rush in to attack. Naturally, we are not scoring. Advice and drill ideas would be most welcome! J.G. Coach, Maryland USA
