How do you keep the right distance as a defender?

My defenders (GD, GK) are having problems with the 3 feet distance. They are either too close or too far away and they will not jump. Please could you suggest any practices that will help my players

Two things I use to give the defenders (any player really) a visual re what 3 feet is are%3A 1/ Show them the centre circle and have them defend a player on the other side of the circle - that is 3 feet in distance; 2/ Take a tape measure and masking tape to training. Stick two pieces of tape - 3 feet apart - in different parts of the circle (or court for that matter). Have the girls play a slow game to give the defenders time to adjust - making sure the attackers take a pass near a piece of tape and the defender defends from the other piece 3 feet away. Pretty soon, they will be able to judge without looking down. Do this drill for 10 mins every couple of sessions. Last bit of advice, all players need to be able to adjust to different umpires. If they feel they have the distance and are getting called, half a step back should fix it! The umpires won't adjust, the player has to!! Good luck - hope it helps Bill
