I am coaching 9 and 10 year old girls who have played little or no netball to date. Am I best to rotate their positions so they can experience them all or keep them in the same place for a while until they get used to it?
Most definitely swap them around, so they get a feel for each position. This will also give you an idea where the strengths and weaknesses are. I would be inclined to put them into a position and then the opposing position straight after (ie/ start at WA then move them to WD) as they have the same area to move within, only they are attacking not defending. Same with the shooting positions and defense.
I have coached 8yr to under 13's and have always trained the girls in the positions where they will play on match day, this way you can explain the position at training.
I have always explained to the girls at the beginning my intentions with the rotations, ensuring fairness for a 10 team side have played 8 of the girls for 3 quarters and 2 girls for 2 quarters each match day. By keeping records of the amount of quarters played by each you can rotate the girls that play the 2 quarters with different girls each match.
By sticking to a fair rotation, parents are usually kept happy too.
