as a player, my biggest flaw is my obstructions when I'm marking. I know about checking my feet before I put my arms up, but does anyone have any other tips on putting pressure especially when the opponent is taking a shot?
Hi Catherine,
To improve your marking and avoid obstructions, especially when the opponent is taking a shot, consider these tips:
Lean and Jump: Practice the Lean, Jump, Ladder, Late Hand (LJLL) technique. Lean from 3 feet away, balancing with your hand over the ball. Jump to anticipate the ball's release and distract the shooter's rhythm.
Timing and Rhythm: Learn the shooter's rhythm. Determine if they are a 1-second or 2-second shooter and time your jumps to interfere with their shot.
Make Your Presence Known: Make yourself as big as possible without breaking the obstruction rule. Ensure you start at the correct distance and maintain it.
Boxing Out: After a shot, quickly turn and box out the player to contest for the rebound. Use your body to hold space and prevent the shooter from moving closer to the post.
These strategies can help you apply pressure without committing obstructions. Keep practicing, and you'll see improvement!
I hope this helps,
Cam

No more 50/50 toss-ups. When simultaneous infringements occur, possession now goes to the team that last had the ball. Here's what it means for your coaching.
Train your defenders to win clean turnovers, not just disrupt. The difference between good defenders and great ones is taking the ball, not just touching it.
