i coach an under 15s team and my gaolers are struggling to move in the ring. They seem only make straight leads and do not get in front. Are there any drills or advice to help my gaolers move efficiently in the ring?
Footwork and lots of it, around cones, markers or passive defenders, in figure 8, triangles, in and out to edge of circle and always with eyes up to the imaginary ball outside the circle. They can do these routines individually and then together where they have to create space for each other, introduce the ball coming in then active defenders. Once the movement in the circle improves introduce the setting up on defenders and holding space, techniques to get free e.g. rolls, half rolls, step arounds, drops, splits, lunges etc. There is a lot to learn and reward any small improvement to keep them motivated.
to add to what Janet has suggested, also try lead and follow techniques, where one player drives and the other takes up her space that she has left, drive to the edge of the circle near the sidelines and then come back (this can be done in figure 8 drills as already suggested), there is a really good triangle drill in here that helped my shooters to work the circle better. you can also get them into learning how to defend their defence player. I am a big believer in the GS defending her player and controlling their space in order to open the circle up when she wants the pass. besides annoying the hell out of the defence, it also helps with lob passes, rebounds, helping to protect the person shooting by blocking the defence from defending them. there are many ways in which to help movement, but start, as already suggested, get their footwork up to speed, and when they find themselves standing still and still no ball in the circle, get them to keep moving.
Thankyou both! really helped
