Teams on the outside move the ball along their area looking for a time to play the bll across. Centre team work together to look to intercept the ball and retain. If they do win the ball they retain position by turning and playing into the other team before swapping with the team who made the pass that was intercepted. The team who lost possession then become the defenders in the centre area. This practice enables to put into practice somewhat unopposed press, cover and balance that will help when defending in match practice as the shape of the defenders will help to cut off passes across the area. Progression Pressing player can go into opposition area but only 1 defender at a time which makes it important to drop if the ball moves across so that the next defender can then press. Attacker can dribble through the area.
When working on Defence Work as a unit to screen across to make small gaps between defenders. Lots of communication between them to understand which way they are going. Defender one presses, Defender two covers and Defender three balances across. Try and position yourself between the player with the ball and a receiving player in the opposite area to cut the passes. When attacking Move the ball across seeking to create a gap. Identify who is not working in defence as a team and exploit that. Move the ball quick to change direction quickly to catch the defenders out.
