Set up a 4x6 box (smaller for younger players) with a Red player/coach 5 yards outside the box and a series of Green players 5 yards outside the other side of the box. The first Green player will run into the box to show for a pass. The Red player/coach will play the ball into the box as the Green player travels. The Red player/coach will yell "right" or "left", and the Green player must play the ball that direction with their first touch through the side of the box. The Green player follows their touch, and plays the ball into the Red player/coach with their second touch. The Red player/coach plays the ball back to the Green player, and the Green player plays the ball back into the box with their first touch. The Green player follow their touch into the box, and uses their second touch to return the ball to the Red player/coach. The Green player goes to the back of the line, then the next player goes.
For older players, players can take turns being the Red player. Coaches should be the Red player for the younger ages. The Green players need to take a big enough first toucvh so that the ball exits the box and they can play the next touch to the Red player. The Green player should communicate and call for the ball. If the redirect is not through the cones, they should take a dribble touch to get the ball far enough outside so that they can complete the pass to Red.

A player's first touch determines everything that follows: whether they can play forward, turn, or simply retain the ball. This article explores why training first touch in isolation is not enough, and how to design sessions that develop this critical skill under realistic game pressure.
