Community | Wing Play and Crossing 3v1 / 3v2

Gary Key Coach, England

DESCRIPTION

Equipment/setup: end 1/4 or 1/3 pitch, optional 5m circle “keeper zone” using flat markers. Procedure: In 3s, attack the D and score against 1 or 2 defenders. Defender A starts at cone. Defender B (if any) starts in the circle. Switch defender(s) every (5) attacks. Version 1 - Red players start with the ball. Version 2 - Turnover + recovery: Defender A starts with the ball + tries to beat the red players by reaching the 25m line in a 1v3. If dispossessed, s/he must run to the 25m line (or to cone C) becore recovering to help defender B. Variations/progressions: Easier for attackers: 1 defender. Harder: 2 defenders. Increase intensity: (30) sec time limit. No GK: place obstructions/targets in goal ie kit bag, sticks in the angles, to encourage lifted shots.

COACHING POINTS

Focus: use width and crossing to stretch the defence and create goal-scoring opportunities Questions: - How can you get the ball to goal? (e.g. use wing, crossing, draw defender then pass, wall passing, LH player leads deep into box etc.) - (Version 2). Why is it important to get the ball to goal quickly after turning it over? (Before defender can recover). How can we do that? Encourage: players to plan an attack strategy in 3s before their attack. GK focus: make the goal smaller by immediately closing down any ball-carrier that enters it
