How do i defend a very tall large shooter who continues to get lob passes.
Asked using Sportplan on Mobile
Hi Vicki,
Holding shooters can always be a difficult task for any defenders, however there is simple way to overcome this!
I have attached a video explaining how to defend a holding shooter, essentially the best way to mark a holding shooter is to prevent her setting up in the first place. Get your defence to maintain a narrow foot base and quick feet in order to keep moving around your shooter. This will make the shooter keep having to move and try to re-set up in a different position, it will also mean the ball carrier cannot clearly see where the shooter wants the ball, preventing these lob passes.
A good way to practice this is with the drills I have selected below:
Moving round attacker
1 vs 2 Guarding Ball Side
Hope this helps.

Split circle defence is the system the top three NSL teams have built their identity around in 2026. The Goal Keeper and Goal Defence divide the circle into zones, switch in synchrony, and make every passing option look risky. Here is how to coach it.
Most netball shooters know how to shoot. The difference at the top is who can shoot when it counts. A structured 10-minute pre-game mental routine is the most under-used performance tool in club netball - and it is the simplest to teach.
The best Goal Defences in the 2026 NSL season are intercepting more than ever. The reason is not raw athleticism. It is a deliberate shift from chasing the attacker to driving into the flight path of the ball. Here is how to coach it.
