From my years of playing netball the only way to beat a defensive zone is to "break" it. In a zone the defender is responsible for space not a player therefore if one or two of your players man up on the opposition the zone is broken as they defenders will need to defend the players. They key is not to panic when you hit a zone play.

Hi Kerrie,
I agree with Lia, the best way to beat a defensive zone is to break it. This means encouraging your players to have the confidence to take on the defenders to pull them with your attacker and open up space. Once this space has opened up the attacker must drive hard into this space to receive the ball. Often the attacking players who take on the defenders and draw them away feel they are not doing anything as they haven`t been used, but they have played a crucial role in opening up space for their teammate.
I have created and attached a drill for you below, this will help your players practice breaking the zone.

DESCRIPTION
Create a zone defence using 4 defenders creating a diamond zone as shown Make 2 lines of attackers The first two attackers will work together as a pair to get the ball through the court If their partner is not free, the ball carrier can look back to the next attacker in the line and use them in a 'give and go' The attackers need to work the ball to the other side of the defenders Once they've made it through they will just peel out and join the back of the attacking queue
