Why do interceptions fail, ie. what makes an interception successful and what makes an interception unsuccessful?
Hi Mollie,
Interceptions are a difficult skill within netball that takes time to master. Arguably the most important aspect of an interception is timing. If the player is too early they are likely to miss the interception and their opposition receive an easy pass; if the player is too late they are likely to contact the player.
Another important aspect is to cut the line of the ball, not going for the ball at the body. If you see the video below, by cutting the line of the ball you can intercept the ball cleanly, avoiding contact and get in front of your opposition. If you try to intercept the ball at the body, you are likely to be called up for contact and the ball becomes 50/50.
A final important factor is having the confidence to go for these interceptions. For example a GK going out for a `fly` - whereby they leave their GS and taking an interception off another player outside the circle. This requires taking a huge risk, leaving the GS open but also the confidence to fully commit and go for the ball. Not only this but through court players should commit to their interception, if they are man-to-man marking or coming off the body, they need to watch the ball coming through court and time their movement to be successful.
Hope this helps.
in more ways than one
Tight markers win when attackers run in straight lines. Teach your players to dodge, change pace and time their drive so they get free when the ball is ready.
When everyone chases the ball, nobody is free. Teach your team to spread out, offer two options and clear space so the ball moves cleanly down court.
A shooter who can hold a strong position under the post is worth more than one who runs all over the circle. Here is how to coach body shape, a legal hold and a well-timed release, and how feeders make the most of it.
