Of course you should try to keep your contact and obstruction to a minimum to prevent giving away easy balls to the opposition. However, it is largely up to the umpire's discretion. As stated by England Netball an umpire must follow the correct procedures when issuing discipline to players. If the umpire feels a player is contacting or obstructing too frequently or intentionally they will follow the procedures below:
1) The umpire will hold time to give a caution
2) If the player continues they will then issue an official warning
3) Further continued action will result in a 2-minute suspension
4) If the player does not clean up their play they can be removed from the game
Depending on the severity and intention associated with the contact will depend on what the umpire will issue. For example, if the umpire believes a player has intentionally injured another player and caused harm, they may have only contacted once but the umpire can issue a straight warning.
Usually, the player would have to be persistently contacting or obstructing before they would receive any discipline.
