zone how to teach and how to break
To break a zone your players need to go and stand next to the players. This will confuse them as they won't know if they should defend the player or continue with the zone. In my experience this works.
I place my C, WA, WD, GD, GA in the centre third for a zone play, it works very very well, 90% of the time, we get an interception coming down from the opposition GK baseline throw in. Do it every training session, and when you put your girls in their playing positions, have them look at the diagram for the zone you would like set up, and tell them they just have to remember there ONE position, this will get them used to just doing what they personally need to do, if all the girls remember just there position then it will come together. Remember, to play zone, the girls must always be moving slightly and have their arms up tall and moving them around to... you will need to tell them exactly what area of the centre third you want them 'protecting'. I use a code name in the game to remind the girls its time to set up the zone... hope this helps a little.
Karen, to understand setting up this zone better in the centre third, could you email me some directions on where to set the five players up please. [Email removed]
Karen, pls email to me the diagram too. [Email removed]
in more ways than one
Tight markers win when attackers run in straight lines. Teach your players to dodge, change pace and time their drive so they get free when the ball is ready.
When everyone chases the ball, nobody is free. Teach your team to spread out, offer two options and clear space so the ball moves cleanly down court.
A shooter who can hold a strong position under the post is worth more than one who runs all over the circle. Here is how to coach body shape, a legal hold and a well-timed release, and how feeders make the most of it.
