4 Player Passing Rotation

Working in 4's with the final player throwing the ball back to the feeder under the net. Once the drill starts the setter passes the ball to a target player at the net. The net player then sets the ball for the wide player who receives it and then returns the ball ready for the drill to start again. This drill can be measured in time or good repetitions.

2 Warm Up

A game of 4v4, played in basic or advanced style. When a team wins the right to serve and the team rotates, a player (usually in the front right of the court) comes off and is replaced by a substitute who comes on to serve. When the team wins the right to serve again, the same process occurs with the next player in the front right position.

Divide the court into 3 equal areas with a line across the length of the court. (6m x 9m) 8 players per small court. For every team, the following rule applies, after the ball is thrown the team rotates clockwise one turn.

Serve

The purpose of the serve is not just to put the ball in play but to try and score a point or to stop/change the attacking strategy of the opposition. Split stance with left foot pointing in the direction of the target. Right foot at 45 degree angle pointing to the outside. Weight on back foot. Ball in left hand on the top of the fingers at hip height in the middle of the body. Right hand relaxed in front of shoulder hitting. Eyes focus on target area.

1 Techniques

Toss the Ball

Player stands with right leg in front (if right-handed) and tosses the ball with extended arm that they serve with. The ball should rotate more and more times every consecutive toss.

Start with the ball with one of the middle players who volleys the ball to the middle player they volley it back to the outside player who then volleys over the two middle players to the outside player on the opposite side as the other players are working the players that have just worked change places and repeat. This exercise is for players to be able to control the ball over differing distances. Again this can either be measured by time or number of good volleys.

In pairs the players face each other, around 6metres apart. Player 1 throws the ball to their partner accurately so the receiver does not have to move to reach the ball. Player 2 then underhand passes the ball back to their partner accurately.

In pairs, one player feeds the ball for the other player to make an approach and catch the ball. The feeding player varies where they feed the ball according to how competent the player is. The working player should always get around the ball so that the ball is between the feeder and the working player.

Place a few balls on the baseline and spread them out. Players move in and out between the balls, moving as if they were in defence. Make sure players avoid contact with the balls.

The person on the side of the mats feeds the ball to the two players opposite who communicate and pass the ball to the net for the ball to be set up for an attacking jump-volley to the mat that has not been occupied by the feeder.This means that the attacking player needs to work on creating a good field of vision and observe where the feeder has moved to.

You start the game with a throw over the net. The two on the other side of the net communicate and one catches the ball, the other moves to the net and faces their partner who passes the ball to them with a high pass from a volley position with the ball above their forehead. The person at the net <b>volleys</b> the ball for their partner who is about 2 metres away from the net facing them with the hand up nearest the net pointing where they want the next high pass to be placed. Pass the ball high to the area pointed at and that player moves in, and volleys the ball over the net.Then both players return to a side by side playing position ready to play defence. This sequence is repeated without trying to score points but in a more cooperative way so that the format of the game can be learned. When both teams play this well you can make it competitive.

Two players stand at the baseline at 1 and one player stands at the baseline at 5, a feeder feeds the ball alternating to 1 and 5 the players run from 1 to 5, side step the last two steps and pass to a target directly in front of them. Then a player runs from five to one and does the same if you have run from 5-1 then you go to the baseline at 1 and visa-versa. This drill continues for set time or number of good contacts. This drill can be fast, slow or whatever the feeder makes it, you can underhand feed or feed with a topspin hit. You can do this with two feeders feeding at the same time, however this can cause confusion but that’'s ok. Players need to be able to sort it out or give them some help and guidance by asking appropriate questions i.e. what do you do if?

They overhand pass the ball to the player at the net who sets the ball up for the player to move forward and play the ball over the net with a <b>Jump –volley</b>, this is then repeated for a set number, length of time or can be made competitive.

3 Player Passing SMVT:DIGGING ...

Working in 3's one player throws the ball over the net for a player to underhand pass the ball to the target player at the net, the target player has a ball and as soon as the ball is thrown by the feeder he throws his ball so as to bounce once to the feeder and catches the ball being passed by the player this drill can be measured in time or good repetitions. The reason for using two balls is you can do a vast amount of contacts in a short time; the feeding can be changed to a service when the feeder is a competent server as the emphasis is the passing.

Throw the ball in the air, let it bounce then bend your legs. Put your arms out in front and bump the ball up using mainly leg movement not arm swing.Keep it going, changing which arm you bump the ball with (try and use good rhythm and mainly legs).
