Catch and Throw 2

Simple catch and throw game with introduction of basic tactics, throwing the ball into space on the designated court. Catch anyway you can and throw from a volley position in front and above the forehead, you can't move with the ball and ensure you face the net at all times.

2 Warm Up

Catch and Volley over the net

Players work in pairs, this can be done with players facing each other without a net or with one player on each side of the net. Player 1 sets the ball across to player 2 who catches the ball and then sets the ball back again.

Rally Drill 2

Divide the court into 3 equal areas with a line across the length of the court. (6m x 9m) 8 player per small courtStart the game with an underarm serve, and the opposition has to catch the ball and throw it back first time with one of the typical volleyball throws. The player who drops, throws the ball out side the court or in to the net has to leave the court. If the team catches the ball 3 times in a row, one of the players on the side can join back in. A point is scored when the opposition has no players left.

Rally Drill

ORGANISATION:Divide the volleyball court into 3 parts with 8 players per area and 2 teams of 4.TASK:Start the game/rally with an underhand serve where the ball hits the ground. If too close to the net, take 2 steps back. Pass the ball over the net in one go with:- 2 outsrectched arms- 1 overhand- 1 underhandFor each team of 4, the rules are:If you throw the ball across the net, everyone rotates clockwise. If a player drops the ball/throws the ball out of play or into the net, they leave the court. When the ball is caught in the next rally three times in a row the player returns. When the court is empty the other team gets a point.

Rotation Game

Divide the court into 3 equal areas with a line across the length of the court. (6m x 9m) 8 players per small court. For every team, the following rule applies, after the ball is thrown the team rotates clockwise one turn.

Smash

The smash is the main attacking shot used in volleyball and is probably one of the hardest moves to master.

1 Techniques

Throw and rotate

Teams of 4 one ball the team that throws the ball over the net has to rotate as soon as the ball has gone over. The other team has to catch the ball and throw it back over and rotate in turn.Point scored when the ball is dropped.

2 Warm Up

2 or 4 in group, standing sideways across the court. Throw the ball over the net so the other person can catch the ball. Try with 2 hands under arm, over ahead and with one foot in front of the other (like serving under arm).Try 1 hand over head, left foot forward for right handed playersleft foot forward for left handed players. Try with straight arm over head.

Volley

One partner catches and throws or volleys the ball moving the other partner side-side so as to be able to volley using good footwork and rhythm to play the ball back to the partner.

2 Warm Up

2 players, 1 ball and a hoop Each player stands about 1.5m away from the hoop. Throw the ball via a bounce ball in the hoop to the other player making it as difficult as possible for the other player to catch the ball.After catching the ball the other player throws the ball back as quickly as possible to make the player move. A point is scored as soon as one of the players drops the ball.

The first player starts the game with a throw over the net.The two players on the other side of the net communicate - with one moving towards the net and the other who volleys the ball while their partner moves to meet the ball.The player that has moved to the net faces their partner to receive and return the pass.The player who first passed the ball moves towards the net and points to where they want the next high pass to be placed.The player then volleys the ball over the net.After this both players should return to a side by side playing position ready to play defence and start the drill again.

Dig Volley Roll Warm Up 2 Warm...

Volley the ball to your partner who digs the ball to themselves then volleys the ball back to you, whilst they are doing that you do a dive, roll or something else then they do the same as you dig and volley. Do this for a set time or number of good contacts.

A game of 3v3. After each crossing of the net by the ball, players rotate one place around a position on court, increasing the mental concentration needed by the players to adapt to the different roles on court in each position

Volley and Follow 2 Warm Up - ...

Start with a throw or volley, then the player follows the ball and joins the queue of players at the other side of the net, this is then repeated for amount of time or number of repetitions (if an error is made you can make them start again, this helps to make them concentrate).You can also add little extra bits i.e. touch the opposite end baseline before joining the queue or do two blocks at the net on your way through.

Start the game by volleying the ball over the net to the player at the back of court. They overhand pass the ball to the player at the net who sets the ball up for the player to move forward and play the ball over the net with a <b>Jump –volley</b>, this is then repeated for a set number, length of time or can be made competitive.

Start with the ball with one of the middle players who volleys the ball to the middle player they volley it back to the outside player who then volleys over the two middle players to the outside player on the opposite side as the other players are working the players that have just worked change places and repeat. This exercise is for players to be able to control the ball over differing distances. Again this can either be measured by time or number of good volleys.

The person on the side of the mats feeds the ball to the two players who communicate pass the ball to the net for the ball to be set up for an attacking jump-volley to the mat that has not been occupied by the feeder. This means that the attacking player needs to work on creating a good field of vision and observe where the feeder has moved to.

Players work in groups of 4. To start this drill one player throws the ball over the net. The player on the other side moves to be under the ball and then bumps it to the player to their right at the net. The setter then passes the ball to the fourth player who already has a ball. As soon as the ball is thrown/served by the feeder the fourth player should throw his ball, bouncing once before it reaches them, so that they're ready to serve the ball as soon as the setter has passed the ball back to the fourth player.

To start the exercise, one player volleys the ball to their partner who digs the ball up to themselves then volleys the ball back. The other player then repeats this pattern.

The first player starts the game with a throw over the net. The two players on the other side of the net communicate - with one moving towards the net and the other who volleys the ball. The player that has moved to the net faces their partner who passes the ball to them with a high pass from a volley position with the ball above their forehead. The person at the net volleys the ball for their partner who is about 2 metres away from the net facing them with the hand up nearest the net pointing where they want the next high pass to be placed. The player then passes the ball high to the area pointed at and that player moves in, and volleys the ball over the net. Then both players return to a side by side playing position ready to play defence and start the drill again.

Players then move back to the 3 metre line and volley the ball high to each other moving the opposite way until they reach the other end of the net where they move back close to the net and repeat.

Stand facing a partner on the other side of the net and about 1 metre behind the 3 metre line; throw the ball using two hands underarm over the net to land on the 3 metre line. Keep repeating until accurate.

Stage four of the serving progressions; throw the ball to go over the net to your partner with no bounce, stepping forwards with the opposite leg to the hand that you roll with (using body weight) and releasing the ball slightly higher.
